FAQs

1. What kind of odors does Dead Scent treat?

Dead Scent can neutralize odors caused by mold, mildew, cigarette smoke, fire damage, pets, skunk, cooking, food spoilage, vomit, urine, sewage, gasoline, paint, VOCs, and more.

2. How does Dead Scent remove odors?

Our product generates chlorine dioxide gas by means of a patented delivery method that is safe and easy to use. Chlorine dioxide has a unique chemical structure that targets and destroys odors. To learn more about the how the procedure works click here.

3. Is Dead Scent safe to use?

It’s perfectly safe to use according to the supplied directions. The chlorine dioxide gas that’s generated during treatment can be a respiratory irritant and should not be inhaled. After treatment, all chlorine dioxide gas automatically reverts back into normal oxygen. The remaining non-toxic materials from the kit can be disposed of in the same manner as normal household waste.

4. How long will the treatment last?

Because Dead Scent destroys–not covers–odors, many odors can be eliminated for good. In severe cases, multiple treatments may be necessary.

5. What size Dead Scent do I need?

We recommend viewing the drop-down choices available for each product. These will help you determine which strength is best suited for the area and severity of your situation. If you’re having difficulty choosing between two options, we recommend going with the more potent of the two.

6. What does Dead Scent smell like?

During and immediately following a treatment, the smell of Dead Scent is reminiscent of a swimming pool, although somewhat stronger.

7. How long does the Dead Scent fragrance remain after treatment?

This depends on the space, items treated, and particular Dead Scent product used. The remaining scent will begin to dissipate immediately during the air-out period following treatment. You may notice a residual scent for a few days afterward. This lingering scent is not hazardous and will continue to dissipate until it is completely unnoticeable.

8. Can I leave the Dead Scent treatment in place for longer than the recommended time?

Most Dead Scent treatments exhaust themselves in about 6 to 8 hours, after which they can be safely left in place for as long as necessary until they are disposed of.

9. What do I need to do before treating my car?

Remove all items that might interfere with the treatment, such as personal effects, floor mats (unless they need to be treated), and anything else that may not need to be treated. Lower visors, open compartments, and close windows. Extend and buckle your seat belts. Set your heat/AC system to “recycled” air. Depending on your particular situation, you may wish to clean your hard surfaces with an appropriate cleaner, give your vehicle a vacuum, and change your cabin air filter. Position your vehicle out of direct sunlight or arrange for treatment during a time when sunlight will not be present.

10. Do I need to run my car’s fan during treatment?

If your odor problem has impacted your car’s heater/AC system (i.e., cigarette smoke, rodent nest) you may wish to run your fan (with your vent set to “recycled”) during part of your treatment period, if practical. This is not absolutely necessary to remediate odors in your climate system, but in some cases can improve the results.

11. What do I need to do before treating my RV or boat?

Make sure the area being treated is sealed so that the treatment gas will be effectively contained.

Open cabinets, closets, drawers, and any other interior spaces that you wish to have treated. Position cushions, mattresses, and similar objects in such a way so as to allow contact with the treatment gas (i.e. you can stand a mattress on its side). Make sure people, pets, or plants are not present during the treatment. Close shades to limit direct sunlight during the treatment.

12. What do I need to do before treating my cabin or other living space?

Make sure the area being treated is sealed so that the treatment gas will be effectively contained.

Open cabinets, closets, drawers, and any other interior spaces that you wish to have treated. Position cushions, mattresses, and similar objects in such a way so as to allow contact with the treatment gas (i.e. you can stand a mattress on its side). Make sure people, pets, or plants are not present during the treatment. Close shades to limit direct sunlight during the treatment. If your space shares a ventilation system with other spaces, be sure to seal it off to prevent unwanted distribution of treatment gas. If necessary, position electric fans to distribute treatment gas throughout the space (i.e. treating a cabin with multiple rooms or a sprawling floor plan).

13. How does temperature affect the Dead Scent process?

Dead Scent works best in temperatures above 50 F. Below that, its effectiveness begins to drop. If a treatment must be carried out in lower temperatures, it’s best to arrange for the treatment area to be warmed up prior to treatment. If this is a car, run the heat on high for a time, prior to treatment. If practical, the treatment can even be carried out while the car and its heater are running.

14. What happened to your hunting gear treatments?

Unfortunately, we've discontinued our hunting line, but for those who have purchased these products in the past, you'll be glad to know that our Auto Odor Eliminator, One Hour Treatment, contains the same treatment packets that were used in our hunting scent elimination products, and can be used in the same way. The only difference is that our auto product comes as a two-pack.

15. When will my order be shipped/delivered?

Orders are processed during the normal Monday through Friday workweek. Orders placed during the weekend will be processed the following Monday, excluding holidays. When an order is placed, a delivery projection is generated by the carrier of choice (USPS or UPS). Please note that this is only an estimate and may be subject to change due to circumstances that are out of our control.
